2007 CELEBRITY READ PROGRAM...
"HELP A CHILD EXPLORE THE WORLD THROUGH READING"

The 17th season of United Way of Essex and West Hudson’s popular Celebrity Read program begins on Tuesday, February 6, and will continue through Thursday, February 28.

Celebrity Read, created in 1990 and designated a "Local Legacy" by the Library of Congress, celebrates the rich and diverse history of African Americans and their role in shaping our national identity and was later expanded to include a component focusing on the contributions of those of Latino heritage. The term "celebrity" refers to anyone who volunteers his or her time to share their accomplishments, obstacles and observations with area youth. They can be from all walks of life--from the business community, professional firms and government employees, to musicians, athletes and actors. Real life role models who are willing to share their life experiences are encouraged to become Celebrity Readers.

Readers can select the schools and grades of their choice from among six school districts within the United Way service areas in Essex and West Hudson Counties and spend a morning reading to the children about the accomplishments of people of color.

A kick off breakfast was held on January 24th at the Newark Club, located at One Newark Center, 22nd floor in Newark. Guests were able to learn more about the program and the difference Celebrity Read has made in children’s lives. Attending the kick off breakfast and appearing at the first Celebrity Read at the Oakwood Elementary School in Orange on February 6 are Larry Hazzard, Sr., Event Chairman, former three-time Golden Glove Champion, and Athletic Commissioner for the State of New Jersey. The Co-Chair is Anwar Robinson, internationally known vocalist and 2005 American Idol Finalist, who also performed at the breakfast. This year's Celebrity Read program is sponsored by City National Bank.
