What We Do
|
ACHIEVING FINANCIAL STABILITY
As many as one-third of working Americans do not earn enough money to meet their basic needs. These individuals are walking a financial tightrope - they are barely able to get by, with no ability to save for college, a home, or for retirement. With your help, United Way is working to cut in half the number of lower-income families who are financially unstable. If our nationwide network of United Ways is successful, by 2018 1.9 million working families will be on the road to economic independence. We plan to accomplish this goal with partners in our communities by utilizing tools and strategies that help families:
(1) Increase Income
(2) Build Savings (3) Gain and Sustain Assets
"Many families in Essex and Hudson Counties confront multiple and inter-related challenges that compromise their ability to lead stable, healthy and productive lives. Many are impoverished and face crises for which they have limited or no financial resources to draw upon. These economic woes are sometimes compounded by substance abuse and mental health issues. Children and youth in these families usually fare poorly among a number of indices of well-being, and are highly at-risk for abuse/neglect, low academic achievement, and involvement with the criminal justice system."
